It is bougainvillea pruning day ...

Both the new building of Palazzo Murat (above) and its older part are lined with bougainvillea, both at rooftop level and framing in the balconies

A few days ago the external gardeners who get the weekly tidying, cutting and pruning done at the lush gardens of Palazzo Murat in Positano (a 4star hotel located in the lower parts of Positano, on Via Mulini)  were working again on the lush and winding bougainvillea branches, tidying off the dead flowers of the spring blossoms. If these blossoms are removed, the bougainvillea plants will flower for a second time, and their buds are just about to open, hidden as they are now below the brown and parched ones of spring.
The bougainvillea-clad arcades ..
So in all you get three bougainvillea flowerings a year, one starting in mid-April and lasting until about the end of June. The second portion of flowers now starts out to blossom in August and lasts well into October. And if the plant is growing in a sunny spot, protected from the winds, against a whitewashed wall, you have the opportunity to enjoy the bougainvillea flowering a third time, in mid-winter, January or so.
Rather hot to work between red begonias, lemon trees in terracotta pots, and bougainvillea archways
